How to Get Ready for a Maternity Photoshoot [10 Expert Tips]

How to Get Ready for a Maternity Photoshoot [10 Expert Tips]

A maternity photo shoot isn’t just about taking pictures, it’s about celebrating one of the most precious times in a mother’s life. Whether you’re capturing the quiet intimacy of pregnancy or creating a bold, fashion-forward statement, every detail matters, from the perfect time to take maternity photos to the way light falls across a mother’s belly.

Having spent 12 years as a maternity photographer, I’ve seen it all, first-time moms glowing at 29 weeks, second-time mamas booking earlier in the trimester because they know their bump will show sooner, and twin pregnancies that require strategic timing to keep things comfortable. Every pregnancy is unique, and so is every maternity photo shoot.

But what truly separates a good maternity session from an extraordinary one is preparation. Knowing how to book your session early, choose the right maternity clothes, find the most flattering poses and lighting, and incorporate professional photography techniques, all of this makes a world of difference in creating maternity photographs that feel timeless rather than just trendy.

This guide is packed with maternity photoshoot tips on everything from posing and lighting strategies, advanced gear recommendations (yes, we’re talking Pro-Mist filters and the best in-studio lenses), and insider tricks to keep clients comfortable and glowing throughout the entire session. Whether you’re a mama-to-be preparing for your shoot or a photographer looking to take your maternity work to the next level, this is your go-to preparation guide for capturing pregnancy at the perfect time and in the most breathtaking way possible.

Pre-Session Planning & Preparation

If there’s one piece of advice I can’t emphasize enough, it’s this: book your maternity photoshoot early. I’m talking way before your belly makes its grand entrance! Too many times, I’ve had glowing, excited moms reach out in a panic because they waited until the last minute, only to find out that my schedule (and every other good maternity photographer’s schedule) was booked solid.

Most professional maternity photographers require a retainer (a deposit) to lock in your date, and trust me, that’s a good thing. You’re not just putting your name on a list, you’re securing a spot in the photographer’s busy schedule, ensuring that when your baby bump is at its most photogenic, you’ll have someone to capture it. Plus, having a financial commitment means you’re way less likely to reschedule or forget about your session altogether.

Now, let’s talk about the first step after you book, communication. This isn’t a “show up and let’s wing it” type of shoot. From the moment you reach out, your photographer should be guiding you through the process. Expect an email or call where you’ll go over what kind of vibe you’re looking for, something dreamy and ethereal? A modern studio session? A cozy, intimate at-home shoot? Do you want your partner or other kids involved? Do you have specific maternity outfits in mind, or do you need guidance?

I always ask my clients to send me inspiration pics, these can be from looking at my maternity photos page (to see past shoots) or from Pinterest. This helps me understand their vision while setting realistic expectations. Also, if you’re eyeing a weekend slot, book sooner rather than later, those disappear faster than cravings for ice cream and pickles.

Ideal Timing for the Shoot

Nothing impacts your maternity shoot more than choosing the best time for your maternity photos. The goal is to capture your belly when it’s beautifully round but before you start feeling too uncomfortable to enjoy the experience.

For first-time moms, that sweet spot is typically between 29 and 33 weeks. By this time, your baby bump is well-defined, your energy levels are still decent, and swelling is usually minimal. You’ll still have that radiant pregnancy glow without feeling like you need a nap every five minutes.

Now, if this isn’t your first rodeo, things can look a little different. Your body already knows what it’s doing, so your belly tends to pop earlier. That means the best time for a maternity shoot is around 27 to 30 weeks, any later, and you might start feeling heavier and less comfortable posing for an hour or more.

I once had a second-time mom who booked her maternity session at 35 weeks, thinking she’d be fine because she “felt great” at 29 weeks during her first pregnancy. Well, this time was different, she was swollen, tired, and kept joking that she just wanted to be done. We made it work, of course, but it would have been a lot more enjoyable for her a few weeks earlier.

Another thing to consider? Twins. If you’re expecting multiples, time is of the essence. That belly grows fast, and comfort levels drop quickly. For twin pregnancies, the best time to take maternity photos is 24 to 28 weeks, any later, and you might not feel up to it at all.

Lastly, like I mentioned earlier, I always remind my clients to book their session earlier rather than later. The best maternity photographers fill up their calendars months in advance, and you don’t want to be left scrambling for an available date. Plus, it gives you time to plan the perfect outfits, locations, and styling without the stress of a last-minute rush.

Wardrobe & Styling

Before picking out dresses or fabrics, I always ask my clients: What kind of vibe are you going for? Some mamas love the ethereal, goddess-like look, flowing gowns, soft pastels, and dreamy movement. Others prefer something modern and sleek, body-hugging dresses, solid neutrals, and a high-fashion aesthetic. And then, there are the effortlessly casual mamas who want cozy, intimate shots in a simple bralette and knit cardigan.

The key to choosing what to wear for your maternity photoshoot? Dress in a way that makes you feel incredible. If you’re not comfortable, it’ll show in the photos. That’s why I never push a client toward a gown if they’re more of a jeans-and-tee kind of person (yes, you can absolutely rock maternity jeans and a tank for a modern, laid-back vibe).

Go With Fabrics That Flatter Your Bump

If you’re open to suggestions, I always recommend choosing between form-fitting dresses or flowing, drapey fabrics, as both highlight your belly in beautifully different ways. Form-fitting dresses are perfect for showcasing every curve of your bump, creating a sleek, sculpted look that feels modern and sophisticated. Think of body-hugging maternity gowns, ribbed-knit dresses, or even a simple fitted maxi that accentuates your silhouette. If you love a chic, editorial-style aesthetic, this is the way to go.

On the other hand, flowing dresses and soft fabrics bring an element of movement and romance to your maternity photos. A sheer chiffon gown that catches the breeze or a billowing maxi dress creates a dreamy, ethereal effect that feels effortlessly elegant. The key is balance, while flowy fabrics can add beautiful softness, too much material can overwhelm your shape rather than flatter it. The goal is always to enhance your belly, not to hide or drown it in excess fabric.

Patterns & Colors – Keep It Simple

When it comes to patterns, I always tell my clients: less is more. A solid color is timeless. If you love patterns, go for something subtle, like a soft floral or delicate lace. Avoid bold stripes, busy florals, or anything too trendy, as they can overwhelm the image and take the focus away from your beautiful belly.

As for colors, stick with soft, neutral, and earthy tones, they’re universally flattering, look elegant, and photograph beautifully. Ivory, cream, and soft whites create a classic, glowing look that enhances the natural radiance of pregnancy. For a softer, more delicate feel, blush, peach, and muted pinks add warmth and femininity without overpowering the image. Earthy tones like sage green, warm taupe, and dusty blue bring a natural, organic vibe that complements both studio and outdoor settings. If you want something bolder yet timeless, deep jewel tones such as emerald, burgundy, and navy add richness and sophistication while still maintaining an elegant, polished feel in maternity portraits.

Coordinating Family Outfits

If your partner or kids will be joining the session, coordination is key. You don’t want to match exactly, just complement each other. If you’re wearing a flowy blush dress, your partner could wear neutral beige or light grey. If you’re going for a classic black maternity gown, your partner could wear a dark, fitted suit or a simple black shirt with tan pants.

The trick? Keep everyone in the same color family but mix textures. Maybe you’re in a soft chiffon dress, your partner is in a knit sweater, and your toddler is in a cotton romper, this keeps it looking effortless but still cohesive.

Also, avoid logos, super bright colors (neon = bad), and anything too trendy that you’ll regret in five years. You want timeless, beautiful photos, not a reminder of that one weird fashion phase.

Bare Belly or Covered?

I always get asked the question: Should I show my belly? Totally up to you! Some mamas love the skin-on-skin look, like an unbuttoned oversized shirt draped around them or a cropped sweater with a flowing skirt. Others prefer to keep their belly covered with a fitted dress that highlights the shape without showing skin. Both look stunning, it just depends on your comfort level.

At the end of the day, your outfit should make you feel confident, radiant, and 100% YOU. When in doubt, bring options! A good maternity photographer will help you choose what works best once they see the lighting, setting, and overall vibe of the shoot.

Professional Hair & Makeup

Pregnancy comes with its own beauty challenges. One day, you’re glowing like a goddess, and the next, your skin decides to break out, your hair has a mind of its own, and you feel more “exhausted mom-to-be” than “radiant maternity queen.” This is exactly why I always recommend getting your hair and makeup professionally done for your maternity shoot. It’s not about looking unrecognizable but about enhancing your natural beauty in a way that photographs well and makes you feel incredible.

When it comes to makeup, the number one rule for maternity photos is to keep it matte. While dewy, glowy looks might be trending, the camera doesn’t always love them the way we do. Too much shine on your face can translate to looking oily in photos, especially under professional lighting or sunlight. Matte foundations and powders are your best friends here, they help control shine and give your skin that smooth, flawless finish.

The biggest mistakes I’ve seen with maternity shoot makeup are super dewy foundations that make the skin look sweaty instead of radiant, glittery or shimmery powders that catch the light in all the wrong ways, and grey-toned eyeshadows that can make the eyes look dull and lifeless instead of bright and expressive. Instead of these, I always recommend warm, soft tones. A natural, rosy blush brings life to the face, a neutral or warm brown eyeshadow enhances the eyes without overpowering them, and a soft, natural lip color keeps the focus on your features without looking too heavy.

And let’s talk about lashes, because they make a world of difference. A set of natural-looking false lashes or even a few coats of a really good mascara can instantly make your eyes pop without looking dramatic or over-the-top.

Now, hair is just as important as makeup, and the key here is movement. The last thing you want is a stiff, overly structured hairstyle that looks frozen in place. Soft, effortless movement is what flatters maternity photos the most. I always suggest loose curls, soft waves, or a relaxed updo with a few tendrils framing the face. These styles keep things feminine and flowy without looking too “done.”

The biggest hair mistakes? Super sleek ponytails or tight buns that pull too much away from the face can sometimes feel a bit harsh in maternity photos, and tightly curled ringlets tend to look overly formal or outdated. Also, if your session is outdoors, wind is something to consider, an overly perfect style might not hold up, so go for something that still looks beautiful even if a gentle breeze picks up. If baby hairs tend to go wild, a little hairspray or hair oil will keep them in check without making everything look stiff.

If you’re someone who’s confident in doing your own hair and makeup, go for it! Just make sure to do a test run beforehand. Try applying your makeup in natural light, take a few test selfies, and see how it looks on camera. But if you’re on the fence, hiring a professional can be totally worth it. A good makeup artist knows how to make your features pop without making you look overdone, and a great hairstylist will give you that perfect, soft movement that lasts the whole shoot. Plus, who doesn’t love getting pampered a little before a session?

Skin, Nails & Grooming – Details Matter

It’s the little details that can make or break a maternity photoshoot, and nothing brings this to light more than close-up shots. When your hands are cradling your belly, your nails are right there in the frame. When the light hits just right on your shoulder, the last thing you want is dry, flaky skin stealing the spotlight. This is why prepping your skin, nails, and overall grooming before your session is just as important as your outfit or makeup.

Moisturizing is key, but here’s the trick but avoid anything too oily or greasy, especially if you’re wearing silk or delicate fabrics. Some lotions and body oils can transfer onto your clothing, leaving behind marks that are nearly impossible to edit out later. Instead, go for a hydrating body cream that nourishes your skin without making it feel sticky or slippery. If your shoot is during winter or you tend to have drier skin, start a consistent moisturizing routine a few weeks in advance to keep everything looking soft and smooth.

Nails are another detail, if you’re holding your belly, touching your face, or interlocking hands with your partner in a photo, your nails are going to be front and center. The safest bet is a neutral polish, soft pinks, beiges, classic nudes, or even a simple clear coat. These shades go with any outfit, making them the most versatile choice. If you love bold colors, make sure they complement your wardrobe choices. And whatever you do, avoid chipped polish, nothing takes away from a beautiful maternity photo faster than uneven, neglected nails.

Now, let’s talk about the tricky subject of spray tans. If you’re considering one, go for a light, chemical-free option and schedule it a couple of days before your shoot. A good spray tan can add a healthy glow, but an orange or uneven one? Not so much. Also, be mindful of tan lines, especially if you’ve been out in the sun leading up to your session. Strap marks or bikini lines can be tough to edit out and can be distracting in your final photos.

For overall grooming, think about the little things that make you feel put together. If you prefer a polished look, make sure your brows are groomed and shaped, and if you’re comfortable with it, a little brow gel or light fill-in can help them stand out naturally. If you’re planning on showing any skin, shoulders, arms, or legs, make sure everything looks and feels smooth. If shaving or waxing is part of your routine, plan it a day or two before the shoot to avoid redness or irritation.

One of my favorite tips for glowing skin in maternity photos is hydration. Drink plenty of water the week leading up to your shoot. It sounds simple, but it makes such a difference in how your skin looks, hydrated skin has a natural plumpness and radiance that no amount of makeup can fake.

Keeping Mama Comfortable

Pregnancy already comes with its own set of challenges, aches, swelling, and unpredictable energy levels, so the last thing you want as a photographer is for the photoshoot to feel like an endurance test. A comfortable, well-paced session makes all the difference, not just for the experience but for how confident and radiant your model will look in your photos.

The first and most important part of keeping a maternity client comfortable is starting with warmth and connection. Before we even get into posing, I always begin by asking how the pregnancy has been going. Every mama has a different journey, some are feeling amazing, while others are dealing with morning sickness, back pain, or exhaustion. A few kind words, a genuine compliment about how beautiful they look, and a little conversation about their baby or family can completely transform the energy of the shoot.

When a mama feels seen, heard, and supported, she relaxes. And when she relaxes, her natural confidence comes through in the photos. I always take a few moments at the beginning to chat, whether it’s about baby names, nursery themes, or just how she’s feeling that day. If her partner or older children are in the shoot, I include them in the conversation to make sure everyone feels at ease.

Comfort during a maternity session isn’t just about the emotional side, it’s also about managing physical energy. Pregnancy takes a ton out of you, and standing in front of a camera for an hour or more can be surprisingly tiring. To avoid mid-shoot fatigue, I always suggest eating a carb-rich meal beforehand. Something simple like toast, oatmeal, or even a banana helps keep energy levels steady.

maternity photos
maternity photos in los angeles

The last thing I want is for a mama to start feeling faint because her blood sugar dropped mid-session. At Oxana Alex Photography, I always keep a few easy-to-eat snacks on hand, apples, protein bars, or even a small handful of nuts, just in case. Having something light to nibble on can be a lifesaver, keeping energy levels steady and preventing that mid-session slump, especially if the shoot runs long or involves a lot of movement. Water is also a must. A hydrated mama is a happy mama, and taking short breaks to sip water helps keep everything flowing smoothly.

If a client starts feeling stiff, overheated, or just a little tired, I always take a moment to reset. Sitting for a few minutes, stretching, or just taking a breather makes a huge difference in keeping the energy up. I only do studio shoots but this is also especially important for outdoor shoots where we might be walking to different locations or standing for longer periods.

Another thing I always pay attention to is posing comfort. Some poses look beautiful but aren’t necessarily comfortable, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. Sitting on the ground in a flowy gown? Gorgeous, but only if mama feels good doing it. I always check in, if something feels too tight, too awkward, or too straining, we adjust.

At the heart of it all, a maternity session should be a moment of joy, not stress. When a mama feels comfortable, heard, and taken care of, that glow we’re all looking to capture happens naturally. It’s not just about creating beautiful images, it’s about making sure she enjoys every second of the experience.

Strategic Posing & Lighting

The difference between an okay photo and a stunning, timeless image comes down to two things: posing and lighting. Get these right, and that pregnancy glow will be in full effect.

First things first, posing. The biggest mistake I see people make in maternity photography is treating the baby bump like an afterthought. That bump is the star of the show, and every pose should enhance and highlight it in the most flattering way. Standing straight with arms at your sides? Not ideal. Instead, I always guide mamas into poses that create soft angles and emphasize the belly without looking forced.

One of the most flattering positions is the slight “S-curve” stance, shifting the weight to one leg, tilting the hips slightly, and placing one hand gently under the belly while the other rests just above. This instantly shapes the body in a way that’s both elegant and natural. If the arms feel awkward, I remind clients that gentle, intentional hand placement is key, cradling the bump, softly resting a hand on the chest or neck, or lightly brushing fabric helps avoid the stiff “What do I do with my hands?” dilemma.

Seated poses can also be magical if done right, but comfort is key. Sitting on a stool with a slight lean forward brings the focus to the belly without making the pose feel rigid. The trick is always making sure her body is angled so that the belly is visible and well-shaped, if she’s sitting too upright or leaning back too far, the bump can disappear into the body rather than standing out.

Lighting wise, the goal is soft, flattering light that enhances the natural glow while avoiding harsh shadows that can emphasize anything unflattering. For outdoor sessions, golden hour is the holy grail. That dreamy, warm light about an hour before sunset wraps around the subject, smoothing out skin tones and creating an ethereal feel. If golden hour isn’t an option, soft shade works beautifully, direct sunlight at midday can create harsh shadows that don’t always flatter a pregnant belly.

In a studio setting, side lighting works wonders. Positioning light to softly hit from the side enhances the natural curves of the belly while creating a gentle, three-dimensional effect. I always avoid lighting that comes from directly overhead, as it can create deep shadows under the eyes or nose.

Subtle movements also make a huge difference in how light interacts with the subject. A tiny tilt of the chin toward the light source can bring out the glow in the skin. Slightly turning the shoulders away from the camera while keeping the belly angled forward adds depth and elegance. Even something as small as gently parting the lips while breathing out can soften the expression and make a mama look effortlessly radiant.

The Final Touches

Sometimes, it’s the tiny, last-minute details that take a photo from good to flawless. One thing I always check before taking a single frame is lip liner. A bold or dark lip can be stunning, but if the lip liner isn’t blended seamlessly with the lipstick, it can look harsh or overly defined, especially in close-ups. A soft, diffused finish keeps everything looking natural and effortless.

Another overlooked detail? False lashes. If a client is wearing them (and they often do, because lashes look amazing in photos), they should be slightly curled before the shoot. Uncurled artificial lashes can cast tiny shadows under the eyes, making them appear darker or heavier than they actually are. A quick, gentle curl opens up the eyes and makes them look bright and fresh.

Wardrobe adjustments are also part of these final checks. Even the most well-fitted maternity dress or flowing fabric can shift during movement, so I always keep an eye out for fabric bunching, misplaced straps, or awkward folds that could distract from the overall look. A slight tug at the waist, smoothing out a hem, or adjusting the neckline can refine the entire composition of the shot.

Hair positioning is another tiny but crucial detail. Flyaways might not seem like a big deal at the moment, but they can be distracting when looking at the final image. A light mist of hairspray or simply running fingers through the hair to smooth it out before each set of photos can make a big difference.

Even the way jewelry is sitting can change the final result. If a necklace is slightly off-center or earrings are hidden behind hair, a small adjustment brings everything back into place. The same goes for hands, if a mama’s engagement ring or wedding band is part of the photo, I make sure it’s turned the right way so it catches the light beautifully.

All of these small tweaks happen in real-time throughout the session. I’m constantly adjusting, smoothing, and refining so that by the time we capture the shot, it’s already as perfect as possible, because the less you have to edit later, the more natural and timeless the photo will feel.

Best Lenses for In-Studio Maternity Photography

For in-studio maternity portraits, an 85mm prime lens remains my absolute favorite. The compression it provides is unmatched for flattering facial features, smoothing skin, and separating the subject from the background in the most artistic way possible. When shooting at f/1.8 or f/2.2, the background melts into a creamy blur, keeping all attention where it should be, on the expecting mother and her baby bump. Unlike wider focal lengths, the 85mm avoids distortion, which is critical when capturing close-up portraits in a controlled studio space.

If the studio setup is smaller or requires more versatility, a 50mm prime lens is another great option. It offers a slightly wider field of view, allowing more of the subject to be included in the frame while still maintaining a natural and flattering perspective. I often reach for the 50mm when I want to include more environment in the shot or when working with full-length poses that require more breathing room than the 85mm allows.

For those who need flexibility without sacrificing quality, a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens is a powerhouse in the studio. This lens allows you to move between tight, intimate close-ups and full-length, editorial-style maternity shots without changing lenses. While primes generally give the smoothest depth of field, the 24-70mm at 70mm f/2.8 still delivers creamy backgrounds and beautiful subject separation while offering more freedom to compose dynamically.

One lens I avoid for studio maternity work is anything wider than 35mm. Ultra-wide lenses often distort the subject’s proportions, which is especially noticeable in maternity photography. The last thing you want is a stretched or exaggerated baby bump, wide lenses can make it look awkwardly large in relation to the rest of the body, which takes away from the natural beauty of the moment.

For detail shots, a 100mm macro lens is a must-have in my kit. This lens is perfect for capturing delicate elements like a mother’s hands gently resting on her belly, close-ups of baby shoes cradled in her palms, or a soft-focus shot of the ultrasound picture laid over her bump. The extreme sharpness of a macro lens allows these details to be rendered with crisp clarity, bringing an added level of depth and storytelling to the session.

Using a Pro-Mist Filter – The Secret to Soft, Dreamy Studio Maternity Photos

If there’s one tool that completely transforms the look of maternity portraits in a studio setting, it’s the Pro-Mist filter. Unlike an ND (Neutral Density) filter, which controls light intensity, a Pro-Mist filter softens contrast, reduces digital sharpness, and adds a subtle, ethereal glow to the highlights. This is especially important in maternity photography, where the goal is to capture the soft, luminous quality of pregnancy without relying too heavily on skin retouching in post-processing.

The problem with high-resolution digital cameras is that they often capture every single detail, which isn’t always flattering. The Pro-Mist filter gently diffuses the highlights, giving skin a more natural, velvety appearance without sacrificing sharpness where it matters. This is especially useful for studio maternity photography, where lighting can sometimes appear too crisp, making skin look overly textured or clinical.

One of the biggest advantages of using a Pro-Mist filter in the studio is how it handles artificial lighting. Studio strobes, LED panels, and even strong window light can create harsh contrasts between highlights and shadows. The Pro-Mist softens those transitions, creating a more balanced and cinematic feel. It eliminates the need for excessive retouching while still allowing the subject to look naturally radiant.

I typically use a ¼ or ⅛ strength Pro-Mist filter, these strengths give just enough diffusion without making the image look overly hazy. A ¼ Pro-Mist gives a noticeable cinematic softness, perfect for glowing, ethereal maternity portraits, while a ⅛ Pro-Mist is more subtle, adding just a hint of atmosphere without dramatically altering the image.

black and white maternity shoot
best time for maternity shoot

One thing to keep in mind when using a Pro-Mist filter is that it affects highlights the most. If you’re shooting a high-key maternity portrait where the subject is dressed in white against a bright background, a Pro-Mist will enhance that dreamy, airy effect. However, in a low-key, moody studio setup with deep shadows and directional lighting, it might need to be used more cautiously to prevent highlight bloom from becoming too strong.

For photographers who work with mixed lighting in-studio, such as balancing strobes with window light, a Pro-Mist filter helps create a seamless blend between the two. Without it, artificial light can feel separate from natural light, but with the diffusion effect, everything flows together in a more organic way.

One of my favorite tricks when shooting maternity portraits with a Pro-Mist filter is using it to enhance backlight glow. If a softbox or window light is positioned behind the mother, the Pro-Mist makes the backlight appear even more ethereal, adding a delicate halo effect around the subject. This works beautifully for silhouette-style maternity shots where the focus is on shape and emotion rather than fine details.

Many photographers spend hours in post-production trying to smooth out skin, reduce contrast, and create a more delicate look in their images. But by using a Pro-Mist filter during the shoot, you achieve that luxurious, polished aesthetic straight out of camera, reducing the need for excessive retouching and keeping the images feeling authentic yet artistically refined.

For any maternity photographer looking to elevate their studio work, adding a Pro-Mist filter to their lens setup is one of the easiest and most effective ways to achieve that signature soft, glowing maternity aesthetic that clients will fall in love with.
